Game Summary: Cumberland suffered their first loss of the year, dropping a 11-6 game to Unity that featured 14 hits by torrid Eagle hitting. Unity scored twice in the first off of Cumberland's freshman starter, Adam Bielmeier, when CF Jason Vlasnik, who would go 4 for 5 on the day, led off with a double that was misread by RF Graham Miller. After getting 3B Dennis McKinney to strikeout (who would go on to have four consecutive hits), C Brady Flaherty singled in Vlasnik, on a ball that CF Tommy Zappa lost in the high sky. Flaherty scored on a sacrifice fly to RF by Derek Jorgenson. The Beavers went quietly in the 1st and 2nd without a hit and only one baserunner... Zappa, courtesy of a Drew Walker walk. Unity took a 3-0 lead in the third on hits by Vlasnik, McKinney, and Jorgenson. The Beavers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game. After C Beau Bergstrom flew out to RF, 2B Graham Severson doubled. Bielmeier struckout, but SS Sam Clark doubled, Zappa singled, and 3B Mitch Blaser walked to drive in a run. SS Nolan Scheps was forced to the bench with swelling in his knee, but is expected to be back soon. The Eagles answered with three in the fourth, chasing Bielmeier from the pitcher's mound. 1B Sam Florer led off with a double that LF Sawyer FollansbeeDelong lost sight of. Bielmeier got the next two hitters to strikeout, but issued a walk to P Drew Walker, and then allowed singles again to Vlasnik and McKinney. He was lifted for Sam Clark, who hit Brady Flaherty to load the bases, and then walked in a run when he walked Jorgenson. He got SS Luke Nelson to ground out to shortstop to hold the damage to three in the inning. The Beavers cut the deficit to one in the fifth when Bielmeier led off with a walk, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, and got to third on a Clark flyout to RF. Zappa trippled and Blaser singled to cut the score to 6-5, Eagles. Clark allowed a lead off double to Walker in the sixth, who scored on a McKinney single, who scored on a Jorgenson double to make the score 8-5. Unity got three insurance runs in the 7th, again featuring hits by Vlasnik and McKinney who went for a combined 8 for 10 in the game. Beau Bergstrom singled in the seventh, but Ryan Behling struck out to end the game. |
