Game Summary: The Beavers were able to beat Ladysmith and Joel Effertz at Ladysmith 6-5 on Thursday night. Effertz, who is University of Arizona bound and a candidate to be drafted in this year's MLB draft, kept the Beavers scoreless for the first three innings, while his Jacks scored two in the first off starting sophomore lefty Tommy Zappa. 2B Richard Smolik led the home half of the first by reaching on an error by Beaver 2B Graham Severson. After Zappa struck out RF Mitch Rogness, Effertz doubled, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. C Jason Prince struck out, but Jack 1B Brent Sisko made the error hurt by doubling in both runners. Zappa was able to cruise through the next two innings, allowing only one runner.

The Beavers tied the game in the top of the fourth. Freshman SS Adam Bielmeier singled hard down the LF line, and watched as Zappa hit a bullet home run to RF to tie the game at two apiece.

The Beavers took a 6-2 lead in the fifth, while putting up four runs in Effertz's last inning of work. 3B Sam Clark led off with a walk and stole 2B. C Beau Bergstrom struck out, but got to 1B when on a passed ball by Jack catcher Jason Prince. Mike Forster grounded in Clark to take the lead, and reached 1B when the Jacks threw home. After Bielmeier struck out, Zappa got his third and fourth RBIs on the day with a hard single, platting Bergstrom and Forster, who had both advanced on yet another passed ball. Severson grounded to 2B, but that allowed Zappa to score who had advanced on a passed ball. Brady Rose, batting for Mitch Blaser, drew a walk and stole 2B and 3B but was stranded when Graham Miller, now into pitch, struck out.

The Jacks got two in the fifth to cut it to 6-4. Smolik reached on an error by Bielmeier, and Effertz walked with one out. Smolik scored on a single by Prince, and Effertz stole home on a double-steal. Miller got Sisko out on strikes and LF Mark Schmidt to ground out to Bielmeier to end the threat.

Clinging to a two run lead in the seventh, the Jacks made things very tense for the visitors. Miller struck out Smolik for the first out, but then walked Rogness. Effertz took a 1-2 fastball that appeared to be a clear strike to everybody but the umpire, making the count 2-2. He singled the next pitch into CF to put the tying run on, and sending to Rogness to 3B. Prince struck out on a curve ball, but the ball got away from Bergstrom, and all hands were safe, including Rogness, who scored. With Effertz on 3B, and Prince on 2B, the Beavers elected to walk Sisko intentionally to load the bases. Schmidt hit a hard grounder to Clark playing 3B, who threw a strike to home for the force out. Jansen then grounded hard to Clark, who fielded the ball cleanly and stepped on 3B for the force out, giving Miller the win.

JV Summary: The Beavers lost to Ladysmith 10-5, allowing eight unearned runs on the day. Travis Nyhus pitched four effective innings, allowing only one earned run, and Vaughn Waite pitched two, allowing one earned run, while striking out five. Ryan Behling had two hits for the Beavers, including a double.
